Volunteering and interests

Summer 2022 - Current Member

Along with volunteering at the Start Line for four weekends in the summer, and devoting some of my time to managing the AHS newsletter and social media, as well as writing pieces for the website and assisting with ancillary planning. I also compete as a novice through the SCCA in their Autocross program.

What inspired you to volunteer for Hill Climbs and compete in Autocross?

One day I found my self watching a YouTube channel called “HillClimb Monsters”. The entire channel features Hill Climbs all over the world and highlights the fastest and most rowdy vehicles you’ve ever laid eyes on. I was instantly drawn in and ended up watching the channel for about a week straight. After binging the videos, I thought to myself, “I wonder if there are any events like this near me?”. Well lo and behold, the SCCA AHS was hosting their second to last race of the season in July of 2022 about an hour from me. I ended up reaching out to Vicki, the event registrar (and badass competitor) to find out if there were any volunteer opportunities for the Dragon Hill Climb. She responded with a written invitation to join them in July, so naturally I did.

After the two days of volunteering, I knew this would be something I would dedicate my time to in the summers. It was hands down the coolest experience I’ve ever been part of.

As for Autocross, I ended up meeting a great friend at the last hill climb of the ‘22 season and he introduced me to the sport. I attended a few events in Charlotte, NC at ZMax Dragway and eventually was talked into hopping in the drivers seat. Thanks to the generosity of another friend, I was given the opportunity to drive “Rachel” (2004 Volkswagen Jetta) in the Novice class on the last event in October of 2022.

Since July 2022, I’ve met so many generous, kind, and knowledgeable people at these events. Most groups are passionate about their work and their organizations’ goals, but so far I have not experienced the same level of passion, fun, and general joy from any other group. “The Mission of the SCCA is to fuel a safe, fun and exciting motorsports experience for auto enthusiasts.” and that is exactly what they’ve done for me.
